Looking to avoid those pesky seasonal colds? Trying to avoid the flu this year? Keep reading! I have posted before about my garlic and honey remedy as well as my lemon, cayenne, ginger tea. Well another item I put in my seasonal circulation is OREGANO - in all forms. I use the dried spice in food, fresh oregano for salads, and I incorporate oregano oil as a healthy supplement during the fall and winter months. Oregano is a healing power house. It can be eaten fresh or dried, made into tea, sublingually dropped under the tongue, ingested as a gel tab, and used as an essential oil topically and internally. According to Medical News Today, it is important to understand that oil of oregano and oregano oil (essential oil) are different compounds. Oil of oregano is often placed in capsules for consumption while essential oil must be diluted and is often recommended for external use only. I use all forms of oregano and specifically DoTerra Essential Oils which are touted for being safe & effective both externally & internally once diluted properly. DoTerra has specific recommendations you must follow, on it’s website. You can learn more about DoTerra and save $35 by receiving a year of free membership, if you use my discount link by clicking here. But please, keep reading to learn more about this healing powerhouse. Oregano is believed to be an extremely powerful antioxidant. It is anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-microbial. A myriad of studies have documented oregano as potentially being able to fight cancer and inflammation. Studies have shown oregano’s ability to aid in blood sugar regulation, playing a positive roll in warding off diabetes. Oregano has been used effectively to help with bacterial intestinal infections as well as topical skin infections, because of the carvacrol and thymol contained in this plant. According to IBS Clinics UK, if used in small amounts for at least 1 to 3 weeks it can help manage intestinal issues. Other studies have recognized oregano for aiding with aches and pains, toothaches and even listeria and E. Coli. Some document it is as being effective in helping hair growth, and preventing yeast infections. Oregano has been called a natural antibiotic for its healing properties. Some studies have shown it to remove parasites and help with high blood pressure. Individuals have reported oregano, mixed with a carrier oil, in helping with acne and dark spots when used topically on the skin. As far as colds and flu go, we’ve all heard chicken soup is great in aiding in recovery, why not add a little oregano to the broth? It helps with inflammation, thereby eliminating mucus. It opens airways and treats respiratory issues and may even reduce fever. Inhaling the aroma may open the sinuses and help with respiratory issues as well. Because it is a powerful antioxidant oregano is believed to boost the immune system, working as a terrific preventive this time of year. So, how do I use it? I have a variety of methods as I mentioned previously. I mix a few drops of essential oil into a spray bottle of distilled water and keep it in the refrigerator. Any time I feel a scratchy throat coming on, I spray it a few times a day in the the back of my mouth and on my tongue. This almost always stops the sore throat before it completely takes hold. I’ve used this for years. I also use the essential oil in a diffuser blended with other cold fighting oils when someone in the house is sick. Below is the oil I use to mix in water and for diffusing. There is also a roller ball blend, you can find it here, that is for use in applying topically and great to carry when traveling. Carry this and apply behind the ears before flying or entering a crowded space. Apply to the bottoms of feet at night, inhale the fumes to cleanse the sinuses. I keep these seasonal drops refrigerated, to quickly stop cold symptoms as they begin (follow package directions) And finally, I keep these oil capsules in my medicine cabinet. These are a great short-term supplement to aid in detoxing, digestive repair, parasite cleansing and boosting the immune system as a preventive, during cold & flu season. I will take the oil capsules for a week or 2 if I am feeling a need. Oregano is one item that I have been using since childhood. I love the spice in all sorts of Mediterranean and Italian foods, Wether it’s in food or supplement form it is powerfully good for you! I must say that I am no health professional and I am not recommending this to treat anything, simply sharing a tip that works for myself and my family; as well as some research I’ve found over the years. Always speak to your own healthcare provider prior to incorporating any new supplements. Anyone taking prescription medication is urged to speak with a doctor and use caution when taking oregano oil. Additionally, some individuals experience, heartburn, intestinal issues, headaches and allergic reactions. Always follow the manufacturer directions for consumption!
