12/1/2023 Looking For A Healthy Advent Calendar? Protein Bars, Simple Supplies & A Basket Can Do The Trick!Read NowSearching for an Advent Calendar to delight the fitness enthusiast in your life? I looked high and low and came up with: snacks, candy, wine, beer, tea, makeup, and even socks; but nothing for my workout loving daughter. If you are finding yourself in the same conundrum then this idea is sure to please! I decided to make my own! I purchased a variety of protein bars (both - that we love and new ones to sample) from Amazon. Protein bars a great addition to an already healthy diet. The extra protein curbs cravings, builds muscle, burns fat and balances out blood sugar - resulting in lowered cortisol. Healthy BONUS! I wrapped each protein bar in paper pieces from a recycled brown bag and labeled the bars 1 -25 in colorful marker. You could add decorative accents or bows to each of the packages. I kept mine simple. You could also do a variety of healthy snacks, not just the bars. I chose bars because my daughter has been very interested in trying out some new options. This really is a great alternative to the traditional sugar packed treats and a great way to sample new things. The 25, wrapped, bars fill a dollar store basket nicely. A hand crafted sign and cute bow make this a pleasing decorative piece packed full of daily protein delights for my protein junkie. Now, she has one delightful snack to unwrap for each of the days of the Advent as we count down to Christmas. I placed this Beautiful Advent Calendar out tonight and my daughter was thrilled! I can’t wait for her to start opening and enjoying. A Fall Dish of Nutritious Deliciousness: Roasted Spaghetti Squash Topped With Homemade Turkey and Veggie Packed Marinara Looking for a fall seasonal dish that’s equally tasty and nutritious? This may just be the recipe for you! It’s a rainbow of hearty, palate appealing ingredients, packed full of protein, fiber and vitamins. You can sub a few ingredients and make this an easy vegan option too! It’s low fat, full of flavor and filling. Roasted spaghetti squash is such an easy option when it comes to pasta. The winter vegetable is a healthier option to traditional flour based pasta. It’s lower carb full of fiber and stocked with vitamins and antioxidants. It goes in the oven to roast while the sauce simmers. No pots boiling over pasta water. It couldn’t be easier. This dish can be changed in so many ways. It can be topped with a creamy yogurt sauce for a French flair, tahini based sauce for a Mediterranean flavor or like I prepare it here for an Italian twist. Use vegan ingredients, turkey, beef, tofu, or shrimp. The possibilities are endless. Each natural ingredient lends its own nutritional, vitamin, mineral and antioxidant component, making this dish a warm, nourishing comfort food perfect for the season. So let’s get on to the details. What you need: Roasting pan or cookie sheet Spaghetti Squash cleaned and halved (1/2 per serving) Olive oil brushed on the open squash halves topped with Dash of salt and pepper Place sliced, oiled side down on pan to roast For the sauce 1 lb ground turkey or (tofu for vegan) 2 garlic cloves crushed 1 onion (I used red - it’s all I had on hand, yellow would be ideal) 1 can of tomato sauce 1 can optional Pumpkin purée for thicker sauce 1 TBSP Fennel seeds (adds a nutty sausage flavor) 1 TBSP Italian seasoning 1 TBSP Garlic powder Crushed red pepper flakes to taste 1/2 tsp celery salt Pinch of salt and pinch of pepper 16 oz Spinach 8 oz Mushrooms Mozzarella and Parmesan to taste as a topping Leave me a comment if you try this dish. I would love to your thoughts. Follow me here and on social for my healthy habits to stay fit, fueled and healthy over the age of 50.

Trying to avoid the flu this year? Keep reading! I have posted before about my garlic and honey remedy as well as my lemon, cayenne, ginger tea. Well another item I put in my seasonal circulation is OREGANO - in all forms. I use the dried spice in food, fresh oregano for salads, and I incorporate oregano oil as a healthy supplement during the fall and winter months. Oregano is a healing power house. It can be eaten fresh or dried, made into tea, sublingually dropped under the tongue, ingested as a gel tab, and used as an essential oil topically and internally. According to Medical News Today, it is important to understand that oil of oregano and oregano oil (essential oil) are different compounds. Oil of oregano is often placed in capsules for consumption while essential oil must be diluted and is often recommended for external use only. I use all forms of oregano and specifically DoTerra Essential Oils which are touted for being safe & effective both externally & internally once diluted properly. DoTerra has specific recommendations you must follow, on it’s website. You can learn more about DoTerra and save $35 by receiving a year of free membership, if you use my discount link by clicking here. But please, keep reading to learn more about this healing powerhouse. Oregano is believed to be an extremely powerful antioxidant. It is anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-microbial. A myriad of studies have documented oregano as potentially being able to fight cancer and inflammation. Studies have shown oregano’s ability to aid in blood sugar regulation, playing a positive roll in warding off diabetes. Oregano has been used effectively to help with bacterial intestinal infections as well as topical skin infections, because of the carvacrol and thymol contained in this plant. According to IBS Clinics UK, if used in small amounts for at least 1 to 3 weeks it can help manage intestinal issues. Other studies have recognized oregano for aiding with aches and pains, toothaches and even listeria and E. Coli. Some document it is as being effective in helping hair growth, and preventing yeast infections. Oregano has been called a natural antibiotic for its healing properties. Some studies have shown it to remove parasites and help with high blood pressure. Individuals have reported oregano, mixed with a carrier oil, in helping with acne and dark spots when used topically on the skin. As far as colds and flu go, we’ve all heard chicken soup is great in aiding in recovery, why not add a little oregano to the broth? It helps with inflammation, thereby eliminating mucus. It opens airways and treats respiratory issues and may even reduce fever. Inhaling the aroma may open the sinuses and help with respiratory issues as well. Because it is a powerful antioxidant oregano is believed to boost the immune system, working as a terrific preventive this time of year. So, how do I use it? I have a variety of methods as I mentioned previously. I mix a few drops of essential oil into a spray bottle of distilled water and keep it in the refrigerator. Any time I feel a scratchy throat coming on, I spray it a few times a day in the the back of my mouth and on my tongue. This almost always stops the sore throat before it completely takes hold. I’ve used this for years. I also use the essential oil in a diffuser blended with other cold fighting oils when someone in the house is sick. Below is the oil I use to mix in water and for diffusing. There is also a roller ball blend, you can find it here, that is for use in applying topically and great to carry when traveling. Carry this and apply behind the ears before flying or entering a crowded space. Apply to the bottoms of feet at night, inhale the fumes to cleanse the sinuses. I keep these seasonal drops refrigerated, to quickly stop cold symptoms as they begin (follow package directions) And finally, I keep these oil capsules in my medicine cabinet. These are a great short-term supplement to aid in detoxing, digestive repair, parasite cleansing and boosting the immune system as a preventive, during cold & flu season. I will take the oil capsules for a week or 2 if I am feeling a need. Oregano is one item that I have been using since childhood. I love the spice in all sorts of Mediterranean and Italian foods, Wether it’s in food or supplement form it is powerfully good for you! I must say that I am no health professional and I am not recommending this to treat anything, simply sharing a tip that works for myself and my family; as well as some research I’ve found over the years. Always speak to your own healthcare provider prior to incorporating any new supplements. Anyone taking prescription medication is urged to speak with a doctor and use caution when taking oregano oil. Additionally, some individuals experience, heartburn, intestinal issues, headaches and allergic reactions. Always follow the manufacturer directions for consumption!

Try This Easy Beginner Floor WorkoutRead NowFeeling intimidated by the thought of starting a new exercise plan? Overwhelmed by the thought of entering a gym? Well, stop, right here, and read on! I felt the same, in the beginning. Midlife & menopause enter and we become engulfed in a cycle of hormone fluctuations causing weight gain and fatigue. This web wrecks havoc on our hormones leading to more weight and exhaustion. It’s a never ending cycle, unless we mentally and physically put an end to it. That’s exactly what I decided to do for myself. I will not lie, it wasn’t easy in the beginning, BUT - it was easier than I thought it would be. Sure there were days I binged on cookies or chips and felt awful afterward; and there were days I couldn’t bring myself to get off of the couch. Now, however, that is behind me and I am feeling the best I’ve felt- ever - at the age of 52. In my 30’s, after having children, I worked with a trainer and nutritional coach to get my body back on track. In my late 40’s, I sill possessed the basic knowledge to get myself back into shape I just had to make myself do it. A few things were different this time, including the onset of a few health personal issues including hypothyroidism and another health related surgery, as well as entering menopause. You’ve likely heard of “menopausal or midlife weight gain”. It’s true. If you go along eating like you always have and doing nothing physically to prevent it, the midlife weight will come. Not only will it come, it will multiply weekly or even daily. Factors like increased stress levels (cortisol) - that tend to come at this time of life, lack of adequate sleep (cortisol), and bad eating habits (cortisol & insulin levels) all wreck havoc on our already out-of-whack hormones leading to an exponential growth in the midsection and extreme fatigue that ensues. You may think the best way to battle the hunger and sleepiness is to eat and sleep. This is not entirely true. My best advice if you are feeling tired is to EXERCISE. Even for a short period of time and even if it’s a simple workout, movement will give you energy. As far as eating goes, this is a time to monitor everything and ensure you are getting the proper balance of nutrition and macros for overall health and longevity. I recommend using an app like “MyFitnessPal”. I am not affiliated, this is simply the app I have used for years and absolutely love! (I focus on the topic of food choices, a lot, in other blog posts.) For this post I will stick to the workout. Keep in mind, however, that I made significant changes to my eating habits coinciding with the uptick in exercise. In the beginning, if you’re like me, the thought of working out seems overwhelming and not pleasant at all. Because of that mindset, I probably took a little longer to reach my goals than necessary. But that’s ok…I met those goals and now I set new goals often. How? You are asking. Now, looking back, It was much simpler than you might think. The biggest component is mindset, “that YOU WANT to do it”. With the right mindset the determination and commitment follows. I started out by simply doing a 1-minute plank every day. I kept seeing the “Plank Challenge” on social media and I read somewhere that this is a great way to start the habit of exercising daily. I did the 1-minute plank every single day for 2 weeks. It worked! After the 2 weeks, I decided that I could do a floor workout, quite easily; and it would be less painful because I could do it in any room, watching my favorite tv shows. I looked up floor exercises for each body part and came up with a set that I felt were manageable for me. Here is the link to the exact routine that I did every day for several months. I now call it my “Lazy Workout” because it is just that for me. I go back to this workout any time I am feeling fatigued or just not feeling up to a more demanding workout. With this routine, I noticed, rapidly, that my weight was coming down. I felt less bloated all of the time. My energy levels were increasing. I no longer felt as if I needed a nap daily. My mood improved, my skin looked better and my smile was much bigger. This simple shift in habits helped my hormones, my mind, and my body!
The next step, for me, after sticking with this routine consistently was to add cardio. Incorporating more cardio after over a month of the previous routine would aid in my losing the last, excess stubborn weight even quicker. For me, cardio can be tough because I do not always have daylight hours, in which I feel safe, to get out and walk. A great solution for this, was incorporating an indoor exercise bike. Indoor cycling for 20 minutes every morning, before I did anything else, ensured that I did cardio & added the boost that I needed to achieve my weight-loss goals. I lost 20 pounds in less than 1 year. You can find the Indoor Cycle I use by clicking here INDOOR CYCLE After the loss of 20 pounds, and completely changing not only my body but also my mindset; I incorporated weight and resistance band training a few times a week. Now my goals are more about maintenance and muscle building. I have finally learned in my 50’s that exercise isn’t just about how we look. It is about how we feel, regulating our hormones, and establishing healthy behaviors and creating a positive state for longevity. That is my focus now, LONGEVITY. My entire mindset has shifted to a place of looking to the future and planning for movement, function, and mental stamina - as well as building some pretty decent muscle for a 50 year old! Please send me a comment or reach out if I can offer more info on my experiences in embarking on a fitness journey. I am glad to offer the support. I found a support system helped me tremendously in getting started. Please, also, leave me a comment if you have any tips to share. I appreciate the feedback, always. If so, Read on! This DELICIOUS protein breakfast-bowl is disguised as dessert. It’s so easy to make and packed with protein, vitamins and nutrients. This was a huge hit with my entire family. The full recipe card is below with lots of information! A few of my favorite ingredients before we start: You can find one of my favorite unflavored Collagen powders here And you can find the chia I keep stocked in my pantry here One of the terrific things about pumpkin purée is that its loaded with nutrition. It contains Iron, TONS of vitamin A, potassium and calcium. Pumpkin is a good source of fiber too. Typically people think of canned pumpkin for pumpkin pie, but what about a healthy breakfast instead?
Here’s my adaptation of this delightful fall dessert. Adding greek yogurt and collagen powder to the mix increases the protein with little fat and sugar while making it even more filling. Yogurt lends a creaminess to this recipe to satisfy the dessert craving. Chia is great for overall health and lends a texture to this pudding like mixture. It adds fiber and protein as well as good omega fats. Making this a health boosting treat! I use a flavorless collagen for this recipe to ensure pumpkin pie flavor comes through. The dessert vibes come from the pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon while the flavor is enhanced and a subtle sweetness is added with pumpkin flavored “skinny” sugar free coffee syrup. I topped mine with a handful of seasonal Pumpkin Spice Cheerios for the crunchy satisfaction of “pie”. At 270 calories, 21 grams of protein, 16 carbs, 6g fiber, 5g each of sugar & fat, this bowl contains 128% of the RDA for vitamin A, 104% vitamin C, 10% calcium and 14% of iron. That’s quite a nutritional powerhouse to start the day. Not only that, but this bowl is filling, satisfies the fall cravings and provides a ton of energy. The leggings have even more high reviews, come in a 3 pack of various colors; and are the most comfortable I own! I am wearing the small-medium. The jeans, I’ve owned for years and just love them! I have linked them, in my Amazon Storefront, as well. I paired the outfit with 2 different ballet flats, also linked in my store. These are stretchy, comfortable, true to size and washable! They are a really great dupe for an expensive designer shoe that I will not name. I love the sweater, equally, paired with leggings for a morning school drop-off and then to the gym with workout attire under, or with jeans and belt for a dressier daytime look. This sweater would even pair well, belted with a long skirt for the office. You can shop my whole look on Amazon at the button here. Photos ©copyright SheDo50Too I love finding new on-the-go snack options to include in my rotation. It’s a huge bonus when one meets caloric, macro, nutrient, taste and midlife needs all at once. Roasted edamame is one such find! Recently, I revisited this small pre-packaged, 100 calorie, snack because it packs perfectly for my family’s busy lifestyle. This tiny package - seen here - fits perfectly in a purse, lunchbox, backpack or even a pocket. And as you can see from the nutrition panel at 100 calories it packs a punch in the nutrient area! 11 grams of protein, 4 grams of good fat, 6 carbs, 4 grams of fiber and only 2 grams of sugar - along with calcium, iron and potassium make this crunchy, salty snack just perfect for anyone. Edamame is simply young, immature, soybeans. It is a member of the legume family. According to Healthline, edamame contain a whole list of vitamins and minerals including: magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, folate, vitamin k1, thiamine, riboflavin and copper. And..we are not just talking about small percentages of these nutrients. Edamame is packed! A true powerhouse. Because of the macro makeup it may be healthier for blood sugar levels than other snacks. Additionally, edamame and soy in general, are believed to alleviate some menopausal symptoms. That’s a major plus to me! The high calcium content may help with bone health as well. My whole family is enjoying this snack lately. Everyone loves that it’s pre-portioned so they know exactly what they are consuming. This is a shelf stable item, so it travels very well. This works as a stand-alone snack straight from the pack. Recently, we have enjoyed the small crunchy legumes on top of salads, in savory yogurt and rice bowls. The options are endless. If you would like to give them a try, these particular packs of Edamame can be found at the link below.
