I say all of the time, “I quite literally changed from a couch potato to a fitness enthusiast overnight.” Sounds easy, and it is easy to say now, but it definitely didn’t seem easy before I embarked on this journey. I changed my health and fitness habits, over time if I am being honest, but my mindset looking back is I started by doing a plank every day and doing a little bit of movement in the kitchen. That kicked started everything else for me. Small habit changes lead to bigger changes overall. I speak on all of these habits in my other blog posts. For today, I will outline the 6 major changes I made in my health habits that lead me to be in much better physical and mental shape today at 52 than I was in my 40s. First, I already mentioned the plank. I kept seeing a 30 day plank challenge on social media and decided at a minimum I could at least do that. It didn’t seem time consuming or strenuous. So, I did just that - a 30 second plank every day for a week and gradually built up to a minute every day. I still do a one minute plank every single day, even if I don’t fit in any other exercise. Gradually doing this plank led to my kitchen exercise routine, then to a full fledged weight and cardio routine. I highly recommend finding something for yourself, like the plank, that is manageable and stick with it. I will say, choose something you feel is manageable for you, and start with that. If doing a plank on the ground is too much, start on the wall or on a counter. Do one small thing everyday for at least 2 weeks. (This is documented as the time needed to start a new habit.) After the two weeks, adding on will be easier, more manageable. Just start with one small, achievable goal and worry about the next step when that first goal is achieved. The second major lifestyle change I made is to meal prep. I cannot emphasize enough how much meal prepping helps. Not just for weight-loss or supporting a new fitness plan, meal prepping keeps every family member on track for the day and full of nourishment, not processed, quick to grab, junk foods. Meal prepping every meal and snack, aids in so much more than just eating right for the day. It also aids in time management and efficiency. For me doing this allowed me to view everything I was consuming prior to doing so. It allowed me to start counting calories and having a realistic look at what I was eating and what I should be eating. Prepping eliminates grabbing a quick snack and mindless eating and changes that habit with mindfully thinking about what should be consumed for sustenance. This whole change in mindset results in more healthy consumption. Prepping ahead makes it easy to log everything in a fitness tracker and stick with it. Give it a try! It’s not as difficult as you may be thinking. Plan each meal and snack for the week and prep it for the family. In our home, we make it a family affair on Sunday. That works for us. We have breakfast and then sit around the kitchen compiling the meals and snacks for the week. Some of the items we prep are overnight oats, or yogurt bowls for breakfast, almonds and apple slices for a morning snack, lettuce wraps for lunch, chicken/yogurt salad or veggies and hummus for an afternoon snack, prunes and crackers for another snack and chicken breast, broccoli and a baked potato half for dinner. I do have quite a few different meal plans that I use each week. If you would like more information or some example meal plan, please sign up for my newsletter or leave me a comment below. I am happy to share more menus and information about calorie content, macros and nutrition The third change I made was to always carry a packed healthy snack with me. My favorite is Quest Protein Bars. These hold up well in a bag for work or travel and they are the best as far as balancing macros and stabilizing blood sugar. Quest bars are highly recommended as a better packaged option by a number of health experts. Fresh and homemade is always best but if you need something packable and non-perishable this is a great option. I will link a few of my favorites below. I keep a protein bar in my bag at all times, so I am never without something to eat when hungry. This, for me eliminates stopping for fast food or grabbing the vending machine chips to satisfy an appetite without nourishment. This is a game changer when dieting or restricting calories to get in shape. Always being prepared with my own healthy foods made a huge difference, again in my mindset. You probably see where I am going, so much of it is MINDSET and creating the habit of being in the correct headspace. You can find some of my Favorite Quest products on my amazon Storefront at this link Another big change was tracking my water, making sure that I was hydrated at all times. I added 8 glasses of water a day, but also incorporated an electrolyte drink. I drank a lot of hot tea and coffee. I cut back to one coffee a day and incorporated more herbal teas. The biggest change, however, was adding detox drinks: lemon & hot water first thing in the morning which helps the gut and is cleansing and refreshing. The lemon and water are great for the skin and fight inflammation, while assisting in weight management. Lemon, cinnamon, cayenne, & ginger (you can add honey to taste) in hot water, at night is touted to burn extra calories by boosting the metabolism overnight. Additionally, this combination is said to support the immune system, encourage lymphatic drainage and fight inflammation. I’m not a medical expert, but I can say, I thoroughly enjoy both of the “detox” drinks and I feel great when they are part of my daily regimen. I’ve used my hot water pot for years. It makes it so easy to have herbal teas and hot detox drinks any time of day with no mess. The hot water is always ready. I will link my favorite here. Once I started noticing some changes in myself, from all of the little things I was doing, I was ready for the next step to do even more. I invested in a few small, inexpensive pieces of exercise equipment: resistance bands, small dumbbells, and ankle weights. I started doing my exercises with a little resistance and weight. There is so much research available on the topic. Strength training is very important in aging because it keeps the muscles and bones strong, it aids in long term mobility and accelerates weight loss. With more visible results and nearing my overall fitness goals, I decided the next step was to improve my cardiovascular health. Doing this, I knew, would result in fat loss and lean muscle gain. Cardiovascular health is very important for longevity too. Cardio supports a strong heart, blood flow and nutrients and oxygen in the body. I personally always felt cardio was a chore and took time away from other things. That was until I found this great valued indoor cycle. The one that I have been using for well over a year is worth the small investment. I found that with cycling, I am able to check email, work on small tasks on my phone or iPad, or even catch up on the news or my favorite show while doing my exercise. What a breakthrough! Being able to distract the mind from the chore makes a huge difference. This cycle folds up for storage and can be easily moved around the house. It works equally well being productive, watching tv or just focusing on cycling. The cycle was a game changer for me with cardio exercise. I now, actually look forward to it everyday and there is no longer an excuse. “I need to work”….I can do that on the bike. “I have emails to answer” ….I can do that on the bike. “I want to sit, relax and watch tv”….I can do that on the bike. Again, mindset. Little changes lead to a mindset of more change. Any cardio you enjoy works great. Walk outside, take the stairs, run, elliptical….whatever it is will work if you’re moving for 20 minutes a day and getting your heart rate up a little. I will link the indoor bike that I love here So there you have the things that shifted me from a couch potato to a fitness enthusiast. Everyone is different, I am simply sharing what worked for me. Speak to your own healthcare provider about what changes may work best for you and then think about what is manageable and enjoyable. Incorporate new things one maneuverable step at a time. If I can do it so can you! Please get in touch with a comment or subscribe to my newsletter if you would like to know more about the things I am doing. I am happy to share. If you have any input about great ways to stay on tack and new fitness routines I encourage you to share. I would love to hear more.

All of these were delightful surprise gifts from family for various occasions. If you have someone in your life that loves self-care and enjoys pampering themselves, even a little, these gifts are PERFECT! The anti-aging benefits of each of these tools pay-off with continued use. Gua Sha has received a lot of attention in recent years. There’s no shortage of technique videos and demonstrations on social media and YouTube. This anti-aging massage method helps with circulation, lymphatic drainage, and over all health. Holistic Gua Sha actually dates back to ancient civilizations so there must be some value to it. I use these devices on my face and body several times a week. The stone tools help relieve stress and flush the toxins. You can find the 2 kits that I have below. The second set includes a jade roller which is so refreshing used on the face and neck before your daily routine. I keep mine refrigerated which helps minimize inflammation and puffiness in the face. The roller is helpful for maximum absorption, after applying serums and creams. Both of these beautiful stone sets come beautifully packaged for luxe gifts and have their own pouches for storage. These are, each, a phenomenal value. The next device that I have incorporated into my beauty regimen, a few times per week at night, is this Derma Roller Micro-needling device. It’s inexpensive but rivals the dermatologist treatments. The tiny needles poke into the skin improving circulation, boosting collagen production, opening up the top layer to better absorb beauty product, and thus offering tremendous anti-aging benefits. After just a few uses I notice a more youthful overall appearance and definite glow. It is important to use very light pressure and keep this device clean after each use. I recommend finding a YouTube video on the proper technique. Another great product, that I would never have thought of on my own, is this cupping set. It’s beautifully package and comes with an array of sizes for facial cupping. I do this on mornings that I feel extra puffy. Cupping is a great way to stimulate circulation and promote lymphatic drainage. Cupping is touted for a myriad of health benefits including wrinkle reduction and improvement in the look of a double chin. I do notice that it helps tremendously with puffiness. I clean my face, and follow with aloe vera gel or oil, depending on the needs of my skin that day. I recommend looking for a YouTube video demoing the technique and to start off with a very light suction and gentle pulling. Finally, if you are looking for a more expensive luxury device, I highly recommend the Solawave. this is a fairly new device on the market. My daughter uses a blue light version to prevent and help with healing of blemishes and uneven skin tone. Mine is a red light therapy wand and is designed to treat aging. Red Light Therapy has received a tremendous amount of buzz recently. The heat, vibration and infrared light are touted to boost the immune system, heal complexion issues, eliminate dark spots, and help improve fine lines and wrinkles. Over time, with consistent use, this wand is said to boost your own production of collagen improving the overall appearance of the face and neck. It has great reviews so far. I have incorporated my wand, once daily AM or PM on clean skin. There is a serum/gel recommended that improves the wand’s effectiveness. The wand comes with its own USB cord for charging and packs nicely for travel. Check it out at this link These are all devices that I love using in my skin care regimen. I see significant results when I am consistent with my skincare. They all seem to work very well for me. Of course everyone has different skin care needs and results may vary. Speak to your own healthcare provider about what’s best for your skin.

I received this recipe years ago and just love it! If you like chips and queso but are trying to be a little healthier this Cinco De Mayo, then look no further. This is just the recipe for you. Simply whisk together your Tahini and Salsa and you have a rich creamy vegan queso. it tastes like cheese queso dip and the texture matches equally. This dip is a crowd pleaser every time I serve it. It’s packed with nutrients too! You can opt for veggies to dip instead of chips to be even healthier. Leave me a comment if you try it. I’d love to hear.

I typically start my day with hot or cold lemon water of some form. This provides, vitamin C and electrolytes. It’s great for the skin, stomach, heart and other organs. Why is hydration and consuming electrolytes so important? Hydration alone ensures the body and the brain function properly. Electrolytes are essential minerals that play a vital role in regulating the body's fluid balance, nerve and muscle function, and overall health. These minerals are electrically charged, meaning they can conduct electricity, and are found in the blood, urine, and other bodily fluids. They include sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and phosphate. Despite their importance, electrolytes are often overlooked, especially when it comes to proper hydration. Many people believe that simply drinking water is enough to stay hydrated, but without the proper balance of electrolytes, the body can experience dehydration, muscle cramps, and even heart problems. So, why are electrolytes so important? 1. Regulating Fluid Balance Electrolytes play a crucial role in regulating the body's fluid balance. Sodium and chloride, for example, are essential in maintaining the proper amount of water inside and outside of the cells. Potassium, on the other hand, helps regulate the fluid balance within the cells themselves. When the body becomes dehydrated, electrolyte levels can become imbalanced, leading to muscle cramps, weakness, and even seizures. 2. Nerve and Muscle Function Electrolytes are also essential for nerve and muscle function. They help transmit electrical signals throughout the body, including signals that control muscle contraction and relaxation. Sodium, for example, helps generate electrical signals in nerve and muscle cells, while potassium helps regulate muscle contractions. Without these electrolytes, muscles may not be able to function properly, leading to muscle weakness, spasms, and cramps. 3. Maintaining Blood Pressure Electrolytes like sodium and potassium are also crucial in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. Sodium helps regulate blood volume, while potassium helps dilate blood vessels, reducing blood pressure. An imbalance in electrolyte levels, particularly sodium and potassium, can lead to high blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. 4. Supporting Heart Health Finally, electrolytes play a critical role in supporting heart health. Calcium, for example, is essential in regulating heart contractions, while potassium helps regulate heart rhythm. An imbalance in electrolyte levels, particularly potassium and calcium, can lead to irregular heart rhythms, which can be dangerous and even life-threatening. In conclusion, electrolytes are vital to our overall health and wellbeing. They play a crucial role in regulating the body's fluid balance, nerve and muscle function, blood pressure, and heart health. To ensure that you are getting the proper balance of electrolytes, it is essential to stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This sums it up. One of the most important things we can do for overall health is hydrate properly. I always carry a water bottle with me and I’ll share my favorite packable electrolyte. The Nuun tubes are great for a day out and about or travel. Each tube contains 10 servings. And they happen to be currently on sale at the link below

Knowing what is consumed in a day is important wether on the path of losing weight, gaining muscle or staying healthy in general. So many of us think we are exercising enough and eating right. I can say, first hand, I was shocked when I started, actually, logging everything I consumed. In fact, most individuals that have incorporated my methods for their own fitness journey have told me that were were genuinely shocked as well. Initially, thinking my food intake was perfect for my needs, I wrote down what I was eating or drinking as I finished it. After the first few days I realized, not only was I eating too much for my activity level, but I was eating the wrong types of foods too. I was consuming far too many calories, too much fat & sugar and not enough protein and fiber. Not even close. All of the little bites and tastes I snacked on all day really added up as much as my meals. I was also able to see on paper that most of my diet was processed. I learned so much about this along the way. Processed foods wreck havoc on hormones and the bodies ability to absorb proper nourishment. Avoiding processed is best. Seeing everything on paper was eye opening. This lead me to find a fitness app. I use My Fitness Pal. I am not affiliated with this app at all, just sharing what I have found to work for me. It’s a free app and I use it every day. I log each thing I consume before I ever have a bite or a drink. (There’s a database and virtually everything imaginable is already in the app, along with the coinciding nutritional information.) I find it to be very accurate. Wen I say I log everything, I mean if I have a piece of candy, take my gummy vitamins, have one slice of apple - I put it all in the app. This gives me very accurate information, not only about what I am eating as far as calories, fat, fiber etc., but in addition to these macros, there are some of key vitamins and minerals tracked too. So, I get a realistic view of my nutrition as well. This app takes it another step and has an area to enter water consumption and exercise. This enables an accurate view of the whole picture. Nutritional need factored in with exercise level can help to optimize whatever results your attempting to achieve. Perhaps I seem a little off topic of “What I Eat in a Day”. I am not. I wanted to share background of how I actually know what I eat every day and why I believe it to be so important. If you are on any type of fitness, weight-loss, health journey I do believe that tracking everything will prove to beneficial. Just try it! It takes a little time to get in a habit. According to research, habits take about 2 weeks to form. My recommendation is do it for at least 2 weeks. Now, on with the meat. No pun intended. When I first started working out my goal was to lose weight. I put all my specs in the app and found that I should consume about 1200 calories with light to moderate exercise. As my exercise intensity picked up and weight dropped, I adjusted the app to get more accurate numbers. Now, my goal is to consume about 1500 calories a day. I have a very small frame and am 5’2”. I am not a health expert, I am simply sharing my experiences. Keep in mind, everyone is different so individual caloric intake and exercise needs may be very different from mine. I recommend speaking with your healthcare practitioner before staring an exercise plan and changing your eating habits. Everyone’s results differ too. We all have different bodies and shapes. This is what my typical day of meals looks like. I divide it into breakfast, lunch, dinner and 2 snacks usually. I consume at least 8 - 10 glasses of water per day. I like to start my morning with hot lemon water followed by an apple and my coffee with my breakfast of choice. I take hair and skin multivitamins daily (which I believe are important to women in menopause as hair loss can begin). I like to have consistent small snacks as illustrated below. Usually, I include collagen as an extra protein that’s great for joints, skin and hair as well. I will link the vitamins and collagen that I use below. On this particular day I had 6 small meals. (I am able to judge how much I need because using the app tells me if I ate too little or too much each day.) I attempt to keep my meals very colorful incorporating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Now that I provided the visual of the meals, I’ll share my app screenshots for the nutritional breakdown as a reference. Notable in the photos, I had about 90 calories left to consume on this day. If it’s a day that I didn’t exercise I would not worry too much about this. On a day with exercise I would finish off my last 100 calories with something like cottage cheese, protein shake, collagen or a small piece of tofu, chicken or fish. Additionally, if I am doing something very strenuous, I consume more. I am not trying to bulk-up to compete in body building. I personally like being slim but having defined muscle, so my exercise and eating work perfectly for me. Everyone has different goals and tastes. This is why I believe an app to be so helpful. I will link all three below. This scent is a mixture of violet, iris, black currant, jasmine, a little patchouli, sandalwood and oak moss. Very pleasant and the scent holds up for an entire day. I just love this one. The perfume can be found here These are truly beautiful Mother’s Day gifts, girlfriend gifts and even a gift of self love when you’re searching for a new scent.

Collagen and Greek yogurt (especially the 2 products featured here), mix together for the taste and texture of chocolate pudding. This is a creamy, satisfying snack that feels more like a decadent dessert. If you are searching for healthy foods and love dessert you should read on. Collagen has been a health craze over the last several years. It is a building block in our bodies. Collagen is an made from amino acids that we consume; and it is an important component in the organs, muscles, joints, cartilage, skin, hair and nails. Our body’s ability to produce collagen naturally, diminishes as we age. This is why supplementing with it may be beneficial. Collagen, as a food additive, (like the powder I feature in the photo above) adds a significant amount of protein, iron and potassium to whatever food or drink it compliments. My personal favorite is the Sports Research Dark Chocolate Collagen. This has a very rich chocolate flavor, even mixed alone into water. It is slightly sweet, which is perfect to satisfy a sweet tooth. I have supplemented with this powder for several years now. I use it in hot and cold coffee, with a little milk, to make a mocha. I mix it in almond milk for hot and cold chocolate milk; and now I have discovered this wonderful Greek Yogurt “Pudding” that is simply Delicious! I am not a healthcare expert. It is recommended that you speak with your own healthcare professional about any supplements that you use. I can say that for myself, I have not noticed any negative effects only improvement in my skin, hair and nails as well as lean muscle mass over time. Of course everyone is different and may have varying results. I am simply sharing something that I truly love. Here is a link to this fantastic Sport Research Collagen. The mixture is so simple. There is no need for any additional dishes. Simply mix one scoop of dark chocolate collagen powder into a yogurt cup and voila…..decadent, rich and creamy dessert is served. I will say, it blends quite well with yogurt. Making a very smooth cup. The collagen blends nicely into hot drinks too. If mixing into a cold drink I recommend blending for smooth consistency, as it can be a little lumpy. Our family has mixed this collagen with vanilla for chocolate pudding. Mix with strawberry yogurt for a chocolate dipped strawberry vibe. Coconut is fantastic. Cherry flavored yogurt and even cheesecake are so tasty. We have not tried one flavor mixture that we do not like. Really any flavor of collagen and yogurt will work based on individual tastes and since the collagen acts as a thickening agent, it should all have a pudding consistency. The nutritional value is fantastic too: at 130 calories, 23 grams of protein, 7 sugars, 11 carbs, and 0 fat. Our family specifically likes to eat the Dannon Light n’ Fit Greek Yogurt. We find it to be the best caloric amount for the nutritional content. The taste is great and there is a zero sugar option available too. Here’s the full breakdown of nutritional value from My Fitness Pal App. See making the yogurt at the link here. No mess, No extra dishes. Fast and decadent. Give it a try and let me know with a comment if you like it. I’m Sheryl of SheDo50Too, a lifestyle blog about being over 50 and staying fit, healthy and fashionable. It has a cropped loose top and elastic waist shorts. I washed mine & dried flat, yet, it did shrink slightly. Dry cleaning may be better if you want to maintain the exact fit. I did not need to iron it. Perhaps with ironing, it would stretch the fabric some. I love the fit on my petite 5’2” frame. I am short waisted as well, so the crop top covers just enough for my frame and age. My teenage daughter loves this outfit so much, she as been borrowing it for herself. I feature it, in the photo, with 2 different shoes, the metallic sandal dresses it up a little for night and the black sandals for day outings are just perfect. I have had both shoes for a few years now. The black are stretchy jersey fabric with a very cushioned sole. These are the most comfortable sandals for walking. My silver pair are no longer available in that color combo but you can find the other options on my Amazon Storefront.
